To achieve this, the state has initiated a Rs. 1.65-crore Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) Project in the Ganga-Yamuna Doab region, spanning a 200-kilometer-long ancient underground river or paleochannel system. Scientists from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) have identified this ancient river system using modern techniques like aerial geophysical surveys and borehole logging.
The project's primary aim is to prevent rainwater from being wasted and instead direct it to underground aquifers. Aquifers, natural layers beneath the ground, store water, and groundwater is extracted through wells and tube wells. The Ground Water Department of Uttar Pradesh is implementing the project with financial aid from the National Mission for Clean Ganga.
The project will select suitable recharge locations and construct groundwater recharge structures, which will be monitored for their impact on groundwater levels and local aquifer absorption of rainwater.
Pilot studies at six locations will provide insights into the effectiveness of different recharge systems.
