World : UN Chief Calls For Global Effort To Set Up Guardrails For AI

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged world leaders to collaborate on establishing safeguards for artificial intelligence (AI) during a press conference ahead of the UN General Assembly's high-level week. Guterres highlighted three existential threats humanity currently faces: artificial intelligence, the climate crisis, and deepening inequalities.

He emphasized the need for a unified understanding of how to responsibly develop AI while recognizing that increasingly powerful systems may require stronger safeguards or additional measures to manage potential risks. Guterres stressed that genuine international cooperation and a coordinated global effort are crucial to prevent a race to the bottom in AI safety amid geopolitical divisions.

He called for guardrails to build trust and ensure AI is safe, transparent, accountable, and centered around human dignity. Despite AI's potential to accelerate sustainable development, enhance learning, strengthen health systems, and boost climate resilience, concerns have been raised about its development outpacing our understanding of associated risks.

Some advocate for a pause in AI development, while many advocate for the establishment of guardrails. Guterres stressed that governments have a responsibility to protect their citizens, including from AI threats, but acknowledged that global coordination is indispensable, as AI does not stop at borders and its risks are equally global.

He warned that voluntary pauses that are isolated, unverifiable, and unevenly applied will not address the problem, and if AI development should slow when risks become too great, more than good intentions are required.
