World : Prabowo Extends Condolences Over Virgo Transport 8 Tragedy, Vows Probe Into Cause

President Prabowo Subianto offered heartfelt condolences to the victims and their families who were affected by the tragic accident of the Virgo Transport 8 vessel in Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, during his public address on September 16, 2026. Addressing the inauguration of the Jakarta LRT Kelapa Gading-Manggarai line, the President assured that the government remains steadfast in its prayers for the families to find courage and resilience in the face of adversity.

Prabowo highlighted the government's commitment to a comprehensive investigation into the incident to ascertain the precise cause, with the results aimed at reinforcing safety measures and averting future disasters. He stressed the importance of thorough examination to ensure the implementation of improved safety protocols.

Beyond the maritime catastrophe, President Prabowo expressed his concern over the ongoing natural disasters affecting various communities across the country. He affirmed that the collaborative efforts of central, provincial, and regency governments, alongside relevant agencies, are efficiently coordinated to manage disaster relief and support those impacted.

Despite the hardships faced by many citizens due to natural calamities, the President's assurance of united government response was evident. The passenger vessel Virgo Transport 8, carrying 243 individuals, went missing in the Java Sea on September 13, approximately 2:00 a.m. local time, while on its way from Surabaya to Banjarmasin.

As of Tuesday evening, 114 bodies had been recovered, comprising 108 survivors and six deceased, leaving an estimated 129 people unaccounted for, with search efforts ongoing.
