Witsel retires from internationals after 18-year Belgium career

Belgian veteran midfielder Axel Witsel announced his retirement from international football on Wednesday, concluding an illustrious career that spanned 18 years and saw him become the nation's second-most capped player. The 37-year-old made his final appearance for Belgium in their 2-1 World Cup quarter-final defeat to eventual champions Spain in July.

Witsel expressed his decision on social media, stating that it was time to make way for the younger generation and new talents. Reflecting on his journey, he revealed he never anticipated achieving so much when he began his international career at just 18 years old. Witsel first represented his country in 2008, quickly becoming an integral part of Belgium's "golden generation" alongside notable players such as Kevin De Bruyne, Romelu Lukaku, and Eden Hazard.

Despite their best efforts, including a near win at the 2018 World Cup when they lost to France in the semi-finals, the team never managed to clinch a major tournament title. Only longtime teammate Jan Vertonghen, with 157 caps, has amassed more appearances for Belgium than Witsel. In the off-season, Witsel transitioned to Ligue 1 club Nice, moving from his previous stints at Borussia Dortmund and Atletico Madrid.
