Wildfires push endangered Sumatran elephants to brink

Indonesian conservationists are sounding the alarm over the devastating impact of wildfires on the critically endangered Sumatran elephant population. The World Wildlife Fund estimates that only between 2,400 and 2,800 of these rare elephants remain in the wild, and the situation is rapidly deteriorating due to extensive habitat destruction.

Geopix, an Indonesian conservation group, reported that more than 4,500 hotspots were detected in 21 Sumatran elephant habitats between June and early September, a 100% increase from August. Over 560,000 hectares have burned in the same period, with hotspots within elephant habitats surging to over 2,800 in the first week of September.

Annisa Rahmawati, a senior wildlife campaigner with Geopix, described the fires' impact as "brutal," noting that habitat loss, degradation, and fragmentation have reduced food and water sources and altered elephants' movement patterns. The exposure to toxic smoke from the fires could further stress these already vulnerable animals, and longer-lasting food and water shortages may threaten their survival in the wild.

The Indonesian government attributes the worsening blazes to the El Nino weather phenomenon, decades of forest degradation, and slash-and-burn land-clearing practices, while independent experts blame climate change. According to the Nusantara Atlas project, over 896,000 hectares have been affected across Indonesia, including August, with the Indonesian government estimating that more than 202,000 hectares burned between January and July.
