Pune resident Darshan Sonawane has paid homage to late Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in an unconventional manner during this year’s Ganeshotsav. Sonawane, from Indrayani Nagar, has crafted a lifelike statue of Pawar holding an idol of Lord Ganesha in his hands. The installation has drawn visitors to Sonawane’s home in Bhosari and sparked mixed reactions on social media, primarily due to the depiction of the aircraft crash that took Pawar’s life.
This marks the first Ganeshotsav since Pawar’s demise in January 2026. The Pune man who sculpted the lifelike idol of the former Deputy CM holding Ganpati Bappa revealed that he spent nearly three months working on the project. His family expressed that the completed idol brought them to tears. The statue also features the aircraft crash that befell Pawar, which has become a focal point of debate.
Sonawane’s family supported him throughout the three-month process and expressed their pride in his accomplishment. The installation is part of Pune’s first Ganeshotsav since Pawar’s passing, a prominent political figure who was a familiar face in the state’s public life. While the crash depiction has divided opinions online, the lifelike statue of Pawar with Ganpati Bappa has become the centerpiece of Sonawane’s tribute.
