Verstappen passes 100 amateur karters in 14 laps in exhibition race

The 2027 Formula 1 calendar announcement has opened the possibility for drivers to compete in the Le Mans 24 Hours, which takes place the weekend of June 12-13. Both Monaco and Portugal feature in the calendar of races immediately before and after Le Mans, making the travel between the events relatively easy. However, despite the absence of a direct clash, the path to a Max Verstappen or Lando Norris debut at Le Mans remains uncertain.

There are still several hurdles they must overcome to become the first active grand prix driver since Nico Hulkenberg to race at Le Mans.

One major obstacle is the Le Mans test day, which is contested on June 6 and falls on the same weekend as Monaco. Rookie drivers are required to complete 10 laps, including five timed laps, on the Circuit de la Sarthe to be eligible to race. Given the scheduling, this could present significant challenges for rookie drivers seeking to compete at Le Mans.

Unlike the NASCAR series, the Automobile Club de l'Ouest and FIA are unlikely to adjust the WEC schedule to accommodate an individual driver's needs. While exemptions can be granted to drivers competing in other international championships, such as Robin Frijns in 2021, it is unclear if this flexibility would extend to a Formula 1 driver.

To race at Le Mans, teams must also make room for the driver in their lineup. Opportunities for a third, Le Mans-focused entry could be explored, similar to Porsche's approach in 2015 when Hulkenberg, Earl Bamber, and Nick Tandy raced. However, the current landscape of hypercar teams and their respective commitments may make this approach less feasible.

Both Porsche and Cadillac relied on their IMSA Sportscar Championship crews for additional entries, while McLaren and Ford are entering the Hypercar ranks for the first time. For McLaren, which is partnering with United Autosports, and Ford, which is building its Hypercar team from scratch, adding a third car is highly unlikely.
