Uttar Pradesh: Yogi Govt Illuminates 8.25 Lakh Homes With Rooftop Solar Under 'PM Surya Ghar Yojana'

The Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh has installed rooftop solar systems on 8,24,492 homes under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, with a total capacity of 2,769.59 MW. This initiative has generated nearly 1.25 crore units of clean electricity daily, positioning the state as a leading player in household rooftop solar energy across the country.

By producing electricity at an average rate of 4.5 units per kilowatt per day, Uttar Pradesh is expected to save around Rs 2,956 crore annually, benefiting ordinary consumers. During June 2026, electricity bills for 1,25,262 households were either zero or negative, as these households supplied excess electricity to the grid, which was credited back to their accounts.

The central and state subsidies have collectively amounted to over Rs 7,300 crore, making solar installations more accessible and affordable for residents. The scheme has also created over 85,000 direct employment opportunities and saved nearly 10,617 acres of land for other productive uses. With 7,750 registered solar vendors in the state providing services like installation, maintenance, and inspection, consumers are urged to apply for this program early on the national portal or through their electricity distribution corporation to secure the maximum benefits within the scheme's implementation period ending on March 31, 2027.
