UK names British intelligence officer who died in Ukraine

The United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence has confirmed the death of Major Paul Wilks, a member of the British Armed Forces, who passed away in Ukraine on Wednesday. The Ministry released a statement announcing that the 40-year-old officer succumbed to a tragic road traffic incident while away from the front lines. Wilks joined the Intelligence Corps upon commissioning from Sandhurst in April 2012, and remained in this role throughout his distinguished career.

He undertook multiple operational tours, with stints in Afghanistan, earning two Service Medals for his service. In May 2026, Wilks received the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. The Ministry described him as "an exceptionally bright and professional officer" and "a gifted leader," who left an indelible mark on those who served alongside him.

The UK's Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, reiterated the nation's commitment to bolstering diplomatic efforts aimed at securing additional air defense support for Ukraine. During a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, PM Burnham emphasized the importance of supporting innovation within NATO to ensure the alliance possesses the forces of the future across all domains.

Burnham also highlighted the significance of the UK's new national space strategy, which was released last week, as it aims to further enhance the country's innovation and resilience in the realm of space.
