Trump threatens EU over ‘hostile’ Canada association plan

US President Donald Trump asserted on Wednesday that the European Union could face severe tariffs if they perceived the proposed Canada association as hostile. EU President Ursula von der Leyen suggested during a speech to the European Parliament that Canada should become the EU's first associate member. This idea comes amidst both Canada and the EU distancing themselves from the aggressive United States under Trump's leadership.

Von der Leyen proposed increased cooperation in technology, defense, and energy with Carney, the first non-European head of government to attend the State of the European Union speech. She listed various sectors for collaboration, including energy, critical minerals, batteries, AI, cyber, and economic security. However, both the EU and Canada have experienced tariffs and territorial threats from the US and competition from China.

The EU member states would need to approve any form of partnership with a third country, and it remains uncertain if von der Leyen's proposal would gain sufficient support from them.
