Travelers outside Seoul gain direct access to more overseas routes

Travelers residing in Korea's southern regions have traditionally faced significant inconveniences when planning international trips. They often had to take a high-speed train or drive for hours northwards to reach Incheon International Airport, located west of Seoul, before embarking on their journeys. However, this situation is beginning to change.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced the assignment of traffic rights for 25 international routes spread across 10 domestic airlines. This policy change disrupts the long-standing dominance of megacarriers and introduces new competition into regional hubs throughout the Korean peninsula.

The distribution of these routes prioritizes low-cost carriers and emerging airlines, who are expected to lead an expansion into key markets such as China and Central Europe. Regional airports in cities like Busan, Cheongju, and Daegu will now offer direct flights to major Chinese cities, including Chengdu, Harbin, Dalian, and Xiamen.

Additionally, Yangyang International Airport, which had been out of service for four years, is set to resume international operations. This airport, located along the eastern coast, will establish direct links to Shanghai and Hangzhou, revitalizing its role in the regional travel landscape.

This strategic initiative aims to address the geographical imbalance in air travel access for Korean citizens living outside Seoul. By redistributing traffic rights and encouraging competition among domestic carriers, the government seeks to enhance connectivity and provide more convenient options for travelers in southern provinces.

The expansion of international routes through these domestic airlines is anticipated to boost economic opportunities and stimulate growth in regional airports, ultimately benefiting both travelers and the local economies they serve.
