TikTok used to recruit Ghanaian Girls into sex trade in mining communities – Challenging Heights

Child protection group Challenging Heights has expressed alarm over an alleged network grooming Ghanaian children for the commercial sex trade via social media platforms, specifically TikTok. The organization revealed that this disturbing trend is targeting girls in mining regions, with some as young as 16 being coerced into sexual exploitation.

This troubling report emerged from an operation conducted by Challenging Heights and the Ghana Police Service, which resulted in the rescue of 47 sexual exploitation victims from six communities near Goaso in the Ahafo Region. Of the rescued victims, 26 were transferred to Challenging Heights for recovery and rehabilitation, while 16 were confirmed to be under 18 years old.

While a majority of the victims were foreign nationals, mainly from Nigeria, Challenging Heights warns that Ghanaian girls are becoming frequent targets for recruitment into the sex trade. James Kofi Annan, the founder of Challenging Heights, revealed to Accra-based Citi News that this emerging pattern of child exploitation in mining communities is a cause for serious concern.

"We are now seeing an active recruitment of Ghanaians, Ghanaian girls, into the sex trade in the mining communities," he stated. He further expressed concern regarding the detrimental effects of sexual exploitation on children and infants in these regions. "We are also seeing a worrying trend of babies being affected by this sexual exploitation and forced prostitution in the mining [communities]," Mr. Annan added.

Mr. Annan appealed to the Ghana Police Service to bolster their efforts against human trafficking and sexual exploitation, particularly in areas identified as trafficking hotspots. He also urged the Ghana Immigration Service to enhance surveillance and border controls to deter traffickers from relocating victims across Ghana's borders.
