'There's one never-ending challenge working for IKEA: cable management' — how Xbox collaborated with the Swedish designers to help solve the biggest problems for gamers while also making beautiful furniture

When the IKEA x Xbox collaboration was first unveiled at Gamescom, two contrasting impressions emerged – the furniture's smart design and its playful features. The result, according to both IKEA and Xbox designers, was a harmonious blend of the practical and the playful. This philosophy was consistently upheld throughout the project, with product developer Philip Dilé at IKEA of Sweden emphasizing the importance of addressing gamers' needs while crafting beautiful home furnishings.

Xbox's Carl Ledbetter echoed this sentiment, highlighting how adaptable their products could be depending on the user's preferences. For example, the controller display box served enthusiasts who wanted to showcase their favorite designs, while the TV stand could seamlessly transition between a subtle decorative piece and an expressive centerpiece, depending on the user's mood.

A recurring challenge for IKEA was cable management, as gamers often struggle with where to store and charge their equipment. Through collaboration with Xbox, the YXSTABY collection aimed to tackle this issue by incorporating cable management and power connectivity options into their furniture designs. The TV stand, for instance, offered a solution by housing controllers, headsets, and battery packs, along with cable management features.

While the collection catered to gamers, it also considered the needs of non-gamers or those sharing their space with gamers. This meant avoiding garish colors and excessive RGB lighting, instead focusing on creating beautiful products that could blend seamlessly into any home environment. The result was a diverse collection of nine products – including stools, seats, cushions, TV stands, storage, and display cases – set to launch in October.

Ledbetter expressed his excitement about the collaboration, noting how it addressed the common issue of where to place gaming controllers once they were no longer in use. By working together, IKEA and Xbox could offer solutions that fulfilled both the fun and functional aspects of gaming, making these products a welcome addition to any home.
