The Mexican Navy’s at-sea cocaine seizures are up nearly 50% this year

The Mexican Navy has made significant strides in intercepting cocaine shipments at sea, with seizures soaring by nearly 50% this year, as reported by Semar. From 25.7 metric tonnes seized in 2025, the total increased to 37.9 tonnes as of Sept. 10. The Navy attributes this surge to coordinated surface, air, and Marine Corps operations aimed at monitoring coastlines and national waters.

These efforts have led to the seizure of 37.9 tonnes of cocaine, alongside the confiscation of 26 vessels, one low-profile vessel, and 54 outboard motorboats, as well as the arrest of 86 suspects. Semar emphasizes that these maritime actions are part of a systematic strategy to disrupt the logistical infrastructure of criminal organizations operating in the sea.

The operation not only seeks to dismantle drug trafficking networks but also aims to protect youth by preventing the influx of narcotics into communities, particularly affecting younger generations. Furthermore, a recent joint operation between Semar and the National Customs Agency at the Mexico City International Airport resulted in the seizure of an additional 1 metric tonne of cocaine, concealed among 3,000 bags of ground roasted coffee.

The authorities highlight that such coordinated actions across various governmental institutions are bolstering inter-agency cooperation and enhancing control mechanisms to ensure the integrity of foreign trade operations.
