Teacher shortage hits Nkwanta South basic schools

The Nkwanta South Municipality in Ghana's Oti Region is currently facing a significant teacher shortage of more than 457 positions. This critical gap in staffing is severely impacting the quality of education, as it hampers effective teaching and learning experiences for students. The shortage is largely due to the ongoing conflict, which has forced many educators to transfer elsewhere.

Christian Ogudi, the Human Resource Officer for the Nkwanta Education Directorate, revealed to Adom News that this deficit is already affecting academic performance, particularly in basic schools. He emphasized that while the number of vacant teaching positions includes only primary schools, senior high schools in the area are also grappling with similar staffing challenges.

Ogudi has urgently requested the Minister of Education and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service to deploy teachers to address these vacancies across the municipality. The Nkwanta South Assembly recently completed the renovation of the Kechiebi R.C. JHS block, a move aimed at enhancing the educational environment after years of neglect.

Assembly Chairperson Joseph Awal Antwi expressed concern over the teacher shortage, acknowledging that despite improvements in school infrastructure, the teacher-to-student ratio remains a significant hurdle. He reiterated the appeal for immediate teacher postings and assured that the Assembly has taken steps to provide accommodation for teachers assigned to the municipality.
