Shorter public housing wait 'realistic and achievable'

A think-tank representative recently stated that the government's goal of reducing public housing waiting times to under four years by 2030 is both reasonable and achievable. Ryan Ip, vice president of Our Hong Kong Foundation, made these remarks to RTHK, explaining that the government will significantly increase public housing supply over the next five years. Ip noted that production will be double compared to the past five years, suggesting that a four-year waiting time is realistic and achievable.

Ip also highlighted the completion of around 30,000 light public housing units in the coming years, which he believes will be sufficient to rehouse those currently living in subdivided units. Additionally, the government's plan to increase the proportion of larger flats for future subsidized housing projects in the Northern Metropolis is welcomed by Ip as a "good first step," given the abundance of land and housing in the area.

Ip further emphasized that there are additional factors to consider when developing university towns, such as campus layout, transport support, and financing methods.
