Seven Republicans join Democrats to limit Trump’s Iran war powers: Who are they?

On Tuesday, a group of seven House Republicans joined forces with all 213 Democratic House members to introduce a resolution aimed at limiting President Donald Trump's military operations in Iran. The legislation, sponsored by Democratic Representative Seth Moulton, received backing from fourteen Democratic colleagues, and seven Republicans - Nancy Mace, Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Zach Nunn, Tom Barrett, Brian Fitzpatrick, Warren Davidson, and Thomas Massie - also supported the measure.

These Republican lawmakers expressed their disagreement with the administration's military engagement, arguing that the constitutional authority to declare war lies with the legislative branch, not the executive branch. The vote to approve the resolution passed with a 220-204 margin, with only 203 Republican House members and independent Republican Representative Kevin Kiley of California voting against it.

The War Powers Resolution, enacted in 1973, typically grants a president a maximum of 60 days to commit U.S. armed forces to hostile operations without congressional approval, with an additional 30-day period for withdrawal under specific conditions. Supporters of the resolution argue that the authorized timeframe has already elapsed.

The Trump administration contends that the president is exercising his constitutional authority as commander-in-chief and that the resolution would improperly restrict his ability to protect U.S. forces and national security interests. The ongoing conflict in Iran has become a contentious political issue during the current midterm election cycle, dividing both parties and providing both sides with ammunition to criticize Trump's actions.
