Saudi-led coalition says Houthi drone destroyed near Makkah

On Wednesday, the Saudi-led military coalition in Yemen reported that a Houthi drone had been destroyed south of Makkah. The coalition spokesman, Maj Gen Turki Al Malki, announced that the drone was intercepted at approximately 6:50pm local time on Tuesday. This was the second Houthi attempt to target Makkah, following a ballistic missile launch in July 2017.

Footage circulating online showed a bright projectile lighting up the night sky near a mosque, followed by a loud explosion. However, the exact location could not be independently verified as Makkah. Maj Gen Al Malki emphasized that the security of Makkah, its visitors, and pilgrims was a red line for the coalition, stating that they would take measures against the Iran-backed Houthis and their hostile and terrorist behavior.

In response, the Houthi political bureau denied targeting the holy city, with a member of the bureau, Mohammed Al Farah, calling the allegation an outright lie. He accused Saudi Arabia of using the claim to mobilize Muslims against Yemen and divert attention from the conflict. Al Farah stated that Yemenis were more concerned with protecting Makkah and Islamic holy sites than those who exploit them politically.

As the Houthi militia intensified attacks on Saudi Arabia, the conflict deepened in the wider regional context. The Houthis have gained control over strategic territory along Yemen's Red Sea coast and the Bab Al Mandeb strait, raising concerns over potential threats to shipping and Saudi oil exports. Saudi Arabia has faced attacks on critical energy infrastructure, including the shutdown of its 1,200-km East-West oil pipeline due to drone attacks that Saudi authorities attributed to Iraq.

The latest confrontation follows a series of Houthi attacks on Saudi targets, some of which were claimed to be in retaliation for Saudi airstrikes in Yemen.
