SANDF retirees turn to court over possible loss of medical cover

Retired South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers are challenging the Defence Department in court over potential loss of medical coverage, according to reports. The Regular Force Medical Continuation Fund announced it will cease processing claims, citing financial unsustainability. This affects retirees, disabled veterans, widows and orphans of military personnel.

Retired SANDF General Les Rudman supports the legal action, stating it is a necessary measure to uphold the medical obligations tied to military service. Rudman urged the government and Defence Minister to honor their contractual duties, assuring that a temporary solution must not solely tackle financial issues but also entail restructuring military healthcare services, along with amendments to the Defence Act and General Regulations.
