Rubio announces US visa curbs for some foreign nationals from South Africa

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on Tuesday that the country is implementing a new visa restriction policy targeting certain foreign nationals from South Africa. This move comes as the Trump administration has cooled relations with South Africa over various issues, such as addressing racial inequality, land reform policies, and South Africa's genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.

The visa curbs will target individuals responsible for or complicit in enacting or implementing laws and policies that enable uncompensated land seizures, race-based discrimination, and inciting violence against minority ethnic or racial groups in South Africa, Rubio stated. The South African embassy in Washington has yet to comment on the matter.

Pretoria refutes allegations of discrimination or persecution against white people, asserting that ideas of white racial superiority pose a threat to South Africa's unity, sovereignty, and diplomatic relations. President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for global efforts to refute false stories about white persecution. Trump has previously reduced aid to South Africa, provided refuge to white minority Afrikaners, expelled South Africa's ambassador, and made false claims of white genocide in the nation.

Trump's characterization of South Africa as dangerous and oppressive for white people echoes some of his domestic policies that have targeted diversity initiatives aimed at addressing historical inequities for marginalized groups. Despite South Africa's high murder rate, most victims are Black.
