Punjab Issues Alert Over Veterinary Medicine Batch

The Punjab government has issued an alert following the Drug Testing Laboratory's declaration that a batch of veterinary medicine, Penivet-5, is spurious. The alert, Alert No. 130/2026, pertains to batch number VL-039 of Powder for Injection Penivet-5, which expires on January 2027. Each vial contains a specific dosage of Benzyl Penicillin, Procaine Benzyl Penicillin, and Streptomycin Sulphate.

The Drug Testing Laboratory categorized the product as "spurious" under the Drugs Act, 1976, specifically Section 3(a)(ii). The Provincial Quality Control Board has mandated retailers, veterinary outlets, wholesalers, distributors, and animal healthcare facilities to cease dispensing the affected batch immediately. They are also instructed to report their stock and usage of the product to the relevant Drug Inspector or Drug Inspector Distributor.

The alert emphasizes the need for regulators to enhance surveillance, maintain detailed supply chain records, and confiscate the product if necessary. Market authorization holders, importers, and distributors are required to review their supply and distribution records and report any irregularities immediately. The public has been cautioned to stop using the affected batch immediately and monitor their animals for any unusual symptoms or side effects.
