Police interdict 7 officers for alleged extortion

A suspected armed robber met his end in a gunfight with the Accra Regional Police Command near Agbogbloshie on Thursday, September 10. Intelligence had informed the police of a planned robbery by four armed men on two motorbikes targeting a Shell filling station. A team from the Accra Regional Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Directorate, assisted by the Operational Unit, confronted the suspects at the Galoway Police Barrier.

The confrontation escalated into gunfire, resulting in the death of one suspect and the escape of the others. The deceased suspect was found to be carrying an AK-47 rifle, serial number 79-HF-3014, fitted with a double magazine containing 136 rounds of ammunition, along with 50 rounds of 9mm ammunition. He was rushed to the Police Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

The body has been turned over to the Police Hospital mortuary for identification and autopsy. The police also recovered two unregistered motorbikes, a Royal and an Apsonic, which will serve as exhibits. Authorities are actively seeking to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects and are investigating the full details of the intended robbery, with plans to intensify intelligence-led operations against armed robbery and other violent crimes.
