Police corporal charged with murder over death of 20-year-old law student

General Corporal Robert Katey Koranteng, a police officer stationed at the Traffic Management Enforcement Unit in Accra, has been charged with murder in the death of 20-year-old Central University law student Ivan Apprey Baidoo. The 34-year-old officer was arraigned on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, before the Adabraka District Court, accused of unlawfully causing Baidoo's death, in violation of Section 46 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960.

According to prosecutors, the incident occurred on August 27, 2026, when Baidoo was riding a Yango motorbike to play football at East Legon Astroturf Park. Prosecutors allege that as Baidoo approached the UPSA traffic intersection, motorbike rider Samuel Wesley Arthur disregarded a red traffic light, leading to a chase by Koranteng.

The prosecution claims Koranteng kicked the motorbike during the pursuit, causing Baidoo to lose control, crash into a concrete barrier, and ultimately die from severe injuries sustained. Baidoo's death was attributed to haemorrhagic shock resulting from blunt trauma to the chest and abdomen, as determined by a postmortem examination.

The Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigations Department is leading the investigation, while the Police Professional Standards Bureau is examining Koranteng's conduct. Baidoo's family has called for a transparent investigation and prosecution if the officer's culpability is established.
