Poh keeps an old trade turning in Sandakan

Poh Kim Tong, a locksmith in Sandakan, continues to operate a traditional trade that has supported his family for more than four decades. Moving from Sungai Petani, Kedah to Sandakan in 1979, he built a successful locksmith business with his wife, Lim Chun Hiong. Over the years, Poh has witnessed significant changes in the locksmith trade, noting the shift from brass to various alloys and the increasing use of electronic locks.

However, there is still a demand for conventional keys for homes, cars, and motorcycles, priced from RM3 to RM10. Modern technology has made the process faster, with a key that once took half an hour to cut now taking around five minutes. Despite this, Poh remains concerned about the lack of interest among younger generations in learning the trade, as they perceive it as difficult and dirty work.

Poh's 38-year-old Japanese machine, a testament to his long-standing business, is one of the few aspects of technology he cannot easily replace with modern equipment. Although electronic locks have reduced demand for traditional locksmithing and the growth of satellite towns has shifted customers away from older commercial areas, Poh maintains that personal relationships with his customers remain a crucial factor in keeping his business alive.

Among his loyal clientele is Selvia Ben, a 46-year-old who has been visiting the shop for decades, having her gate keys, house keys, and car keys made by Poh since she was a child. This long-term relationship, built on trust and familiarity, is one reason Poh continues to keep his machines turning, ensuring the traditional trade survives despite the challenges it faces.
