Oracle India Cuts Jobs Again; Back-Office & Product Engineering Roles Worst Hit

Oracle India has seen another round of job cuts, with the technology giant reducing its workforce in the country to around 27,000 employees, according to industry reports. The tech company has been trimming jobs it deems routine while shifting investments towards artificial intelligence infrastructure. The headcount in India, once estimated at close to 50,000, has been whittled down through multiple rounds of layoffs since April 2026, when Oracle cut an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 positions as part of a global reduction of roughly 30,000 jobs.

Further cuts occurred in September, with reports indicating more reductions in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Oracle has begun yet another round of layoffs, with fresh termination emails sent to employees at 6 AM. AI is cited as the primary driver behind the cuts, with industry commentators linking the reductions to AI adoption rather than performance issues.

Software engineering teams are among the most affected roles, as AI-based coding tools have improved engineers' efficiency. Internal communications to affected staff have mentioned "organizational changes" and efforts to streamline operations. Roles under strain include routine, process-heavy functions such as support, legacy database administration, and back-office cloud services.

Product engineering teams have also absorbed a significant portion of the job cuts. Oracle's co-CEO has stated that AI coding tools enable smaller engineering teams to deliver more complete solutions faster, meaning fewer people are needed to perform the same volume of work. Severance packages for those affected in earlier rounds included a mix of per-year-of-service pay, notice-period compensation, gratuity, and leave encashment.

However, employee groups have criticized the pace and manner of the layoffs, alleging that restructuring is being used to justify job losses despite the company's strong quarterly performance. With Oracle continuing to invest in AI data center expansion, analysts expect further headcount adjustments in India, particularly in roles deemed replaceable by automation, even as the company continues to selectively hire for AI-focused engineering and cloud infrastructure positions.
