OpenAI says it has been working with Anthropic and Google on AI safety for weeks

Concerns over artificial intelligence safety are escalating in the United States following a viral post by a former Anthropic researcher, who claimed that the technology could lead to humanity's demise by the end of the decade. In response, the CEOs of OpenAI and Anthropic have reiterated their demand for collaboration between the U.S. and China to regulate and pace AI development.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman even attempted to appeal to the egos of global leaders, stating that both U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping could potentially win the Nobel Peace Prize if they reach an agreement on AI safety. However, the concept of an AI slowdown appears to have fallen on deaf ears with both leaders, who are set to meet on September 24 and have previously dismissed the idea.

While President Trump dismissed calls for government controls as a "hoax" and praised himself as the "strong and smart president," China's Foreign Ministry spokesman dismissed the discourse as "fear-mongering" that serves no one's interest. Rather than responding to the calls for an AI slowdown, both leaders have emphasized the importance of maintaining their technological edge, as seen in recent limits on the export of advanced AI chips to China.

This perspective is further reinforced by the differing approaches to AI development between the U.S. and China, with China focusing on releasing lower-cost, open-weight models to promote accessibility and adoption of AI technology.
