Olu Jacobs was a national icon — Reno Omokri

Nigerian Ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has paid tribute to the late Olu Jacobs, the renowned veteran actor, describing him as a national icon. Omokri made the statement following Jacobs' death at the age of 84. Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, played a pivotal role in laying the foundation for the contemporary African film industry, long before Nollywood became a global phenomenon.

Omokri highlighted Jacobs' significant contribution to Nigeria's pride through his performances in British television productions and international films. The ambassador-designate recalled the awe and inspiration that Nigerians felt watching Jacobs feature in British sitcoms and global blockbuster movies. Jacobs' professional training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London further enhanced his stature in the industry.

Omokri emphasized that Jacobs, along with his mentor, Chief Hubert Ogunde, was one of the foundational figures of Nigeria's modern film industry. Despite some individuals claiming the title of Nollywood pioneer, Omokri attributed the fact to Jacobs' humility, asserting that his extensive body of work spoke for itself. He expressed condolences to Jacobs' family, particularly his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, and their children.
