Ohio State has young talent. It’s time to let them play

Ohio State's 24-23 loss to Texas highlighted several issues, including their inability to maintain a lead and the defensive struggles against Texas' Arch Manning. This loss has brought attention to the numerous young talents on the roster, who may deserve more playing time. After entering the season with vast experience and talent to replace, particularly in defense, Ohio State needs to start adjusting its strategy.

It's not just about playing younger players, but rather giving the best performers more opportunities to make an impact.

Riley Pettijohn, a sophomore linebacker from McKinney, Texas, needs to start at linebacker against Kent State. Despite only appearing in 50 total snaps last season, Pettijohn has made significant contributions, including nine tackles, a tackle for loss, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and a defensive touchdown. His standout performance against Grambling State, where he recovered a fumble for a touchdown and broke up a pass, showcases his potential.

His ability to look confident and play decisively in high-pressure situations, as seen against Texas, demonstrates why he should be given more playing time. Coach Ryan Day has stated that Pettijohn will continue to play more, and his versatility as a pass rusher could prove invaluable as the season progresses.

TJ Alford, another linebacker, deserves increased opportunities. Alford started Ohio State's opener against Ball State and led the linebackers with 34 defensive snaps, earning the defensive player of the game honor. His athletic abilities and potential are evident, as he was ranked among the nation's top linebackers in 2025. Despite playing less against Texas, Alford's strong performance in the opener should warrant keeping him heavily involved.

His athleticism and explosive potential make him a valuable asset to Ohio State's defense, especially as they face teams that can exploit the linebackers' tackle difficulties.
