Nvidia's GTC will return to Washington and a very different political climate

Nvidia has announced that its highly anticipated AI conference, GTC, will return to Washington D.C. later this year, marking a significant change in timing and political climate compared to previous events. The event is set to take place from November 30 to December 3, shortly after the US midterm elections, which will determine which party will control Congress.

Public perception of AI has taken a more negative turn recently, with growing concerns about the technology's potential impact on the job market and the environmental harm caused by data centers. Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, has repeatedly defended AI's benefits and accused other executives with concerns about AI of having a "God complex."

Huang has made multiple visits to the White House in the past year to discuss AI issues and chip export controls with President Trump. During a recent business and technology conference, Huang expressed frustration with the increasing "irresponsible fears" surrounding AI. He emphasized the importance of not allowing these fears to cause the US to lose the AI race with China.

However, critics argue that Huang's stance is inconsistent, as he has consistently pushed for the US to relax chip export restrictions to China, which could benefit Beijing in the AI race. Independent Senator Bernie Sanders has introduced legislation calling for a pause on the development of AI super-intelligence until more regulatory safeguards are put in place, expressing fears about AI's potential to replace jobs.

Despite the public backlash against AI, Nvidia's revenue has surged as its powerful GPUs, CPUs, and logic board designs have become instrumental in driving AI development. The GTC conference, described on Nvidia's website as an event to connect policymakers, developers, researchers, and industry partners, will feature a keynote speech by Huang on December 1. The multi-day event will be held at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Centre, along with various venues across Washington D.C.
