NLC demands emergency palliatives, wage awards as petrol hits ₦1,430/litre

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to implement emergency measures to alleviate the impact of soaring petrol prices. Current fuel costs in major cities reach ₦1,430 per litre, with prices reportedly higher in less accessible areas, exacerbating economic hardship. The NLC demands wage awards for workers, crude oil sales to local refineries in naira, and expansion of Nigeria's national petroleum storage capacity to strengthen energy security and prepare for emergencies.

The labour union claims the government should utilize windfall profits from higher international crude prices and reject calls for subsidies in emergency situations. The NLC warns that the rising fuel costs will further strain households and businesses, triggering increases in food, rent, school fees, and other essential expenses.
