Nitiwul, Accra Mayor clash over Konkomba Yam Market demolition for 24-Hour-Economy market

Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey and Member of Parliament Dominic Nitiwul have disagreed over plans to demolish parts of the Konkomba Yam Market in Agbogbloshie for a proposed 24-hour economy market. Nitiwul has expressed concerns that the project is disproportionately affecting the predominantly Konkomba traders in the area. However, Allotey disputes this, insisting that the redevelopment is not targeting a specific community.

He has visited the market multiple times prior to the 24-hour market project and claimed he was involved in marking the area for redevelopment. Allotey further accused Nitiwul of misleading the public about the consultation process, stating that he has always been on the ground and knows what he is saying. The Accra Metropolitan Assembly is seeking to improve conditions for Konkomba traders, Allotey maintains, and the community is not being targeted by the project.

Nitiwul, on the other hand, emphasized the importance of protecting the interests of the traders and yam producers connected to the market, as millions of people rely on the Konkomba Yam Market and a significant portion of yam producers in his constituency supply the market. The key point of contention is the engagement between the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and the market's leadership.

Nitiwul claims that he presented the mayor with markings and drawings of the proposed development during a meeting on July 28, while Allotey disputes this account and accuses Nitiwul of contradicting earlier statements about the consultations.
