Nepal raises flood missing toll by nearly 1,000 people to 6,150

Nepal has significantly increased the number of people missing after the deadly floods on August 26, now estimating 6,150 individuals as missing following data collection and verification. This revision comes from the national disaster authority, with spokesman Shanti Mahat explaining that the figure was updated after verification.

The number of bodies recovered so far stands at 1,403, with 105 of those identified. Across the border in China, the death toll from the incident is 43, with 519 people still missing. The combined toll from the glacial mountain collapse between Nepal and China now totals 1,446 deaths and at least 6,669 missing individuals. The Nepali government attributes the catastrophic flood's scale to the severe effects of global warming on the Himalayan mountains.

Despite contributing a small fraction of global greenhouse gas emissions, Nepal faces substantial challenges in rebuilding after the disaster. Prime Minister Balendra Shah will address the UN General Assembly on the urgent issue of climate change during his first foreign trip as leader next week. The Nepali government estimates the reconstruction bill to reach US$4.78 billion.
