NA speaker's water remarks unsettle Indian delegates

Indian delegates allegedly disrupted National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq's speech at the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Cape Town, South Africa. Sadiq was discussing climate adaptation and climate justice when the Indians repeatedly tried to gain control of the microphone and disrupt proceedings, as captured on video.

Sadiq had mentioned "water terrorism" in his address, focusing on climate change, water resources and climate justice without naming any countries. The Indian delegates' actions disrupted the session, prompting the host and Jamaican speaker to intervene, asking them to either stay quiet or leave the hall. Other attendees advised the Indians to listen attentively to Sadiq's address.

Despite the disruption, Sadiq continued his presentation, stressing the need for democratic institutions in addressing climate change. He highlighted the role of parliaments in implementing climate policies and the importance of inclusive participation from various societal groups. Sadiq also mentioned the contentious issue of the Indus Water Treaty between Pakistan and India, noting that unilateral actions by one country could have serious consequences.
