More than a bowl of cendol — Ng Kwan Hoong

SEPTEMBER 16 — Some reunions are carefully planned, while others begin with a simple suggestion: "Shall we go for cendol?" The author and his wife attended the Malaysian Medical Association Annual Meeting and Dinner in Ipoh, which provided an opportunity to reconnect with an old friend, Dr Teoh, a retired Director of State Health Department and public health specialist.

Dr Teoh suggested visiting Taiping to enjoy a famous bowl of cendol at Ansari Famous Cendol, a family-run establishment serving its dessert for three generations. The journey to Taiping was unhurried, allowing the author and his wife to catch up on family, work, retirement, and mutual friends. Upon arrival, they found Ansari Famous Cendol to be a modest place with a simple shopfront and steady stream of customers.

As they ate, conversations flowed easily, reminiscing about memories, children, and grandchildren, and realizing that despite different paths, their friendship remained strong. The author reflects on Malaysian food culture, noting that it provides everyday spaces for friendships to endure, conversations to resume, and social bonds to strengthen.

Family-run establishments like Ansari Famous Cendol have been creating such spaces for three generations. These places offer a reason to gather, pause, and continue conversations, proving that Malaysia's strongest bonds are often built around ordinary tables.
