Minority accuses AMA of targeting Konkomba Yam Market in planned demolition over 24-hour market

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Parliament has accused the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) of targeting the Konkomba community through plans for a 24-hour market at the Konkomba Yam Market site. The Minority asserts that structures slated for demolition are concentrated in areas inhabited by members of the Konkomba community, alleging discrimination.

The Minority's leader, Dominic Nitiwul, who initiated an inspection, noted that virtually all structures belonging to Konkombas have been marked for demolition, while areas outside of their residence have not been similarly affected. Shops within the Konkomba Yam Market have also been targeted for demolition to accommodate the proposed 24-hour market.

The Minority calls on President John Mahama to intervene and halt the AMA's demolition plans, arguing that it constitutes discrimination against the Konkombas. They question the rationale behind selecting an area predominantly occupied by Konkombas for the 24-hour market, emphasizing the need to address the concerns of affected residents and traders.

The AMA's Mayor, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, denied the allegations, stating that the Assembly has engaged with Konkomba leaders and has personally visited the market multiple times to hold meetings with traders before initiating the redevelopment project.
