Meta Lets AI Agents Set Up WhatsApp Business for You

Meta has introduced a new system that allows businesses to utilize AI agents for setting up and managing WhatsApp Business messaging. This change was announced alongside Meta's new AI-focused subscription plans. The system uses Meta's Model Context Protocol (MCP) server to connect an AI coding agent, such as Claude, Cursor, Codex, or ChatGPT, to the WhatsApp Business Platform.

Previously, setting up WhatsApp Business messaging required developers to navigate several tools and services, including the Developer Console, Meta Business Manager, the API reference, and a code editor. However, with the new MCP server, businesses can simply instruct their preferred AI agent to handle the entire setup process.

The AI agent can create a company's WhatsApp Business account, add and verify its phone number, register the account for access to the Cloud API, check the business's Terms of Service, and manage other configuration steps. It can also create and modify messaging templates, test messages and webhooks, and monitor configuration issues. This system enables businesses to manage multiple WhatsApp Business management tasks using natural-language instructions instead of manually navigating multiple developer tools.

Meta's use of MCP servers expands beyond WhatsApp Business, with the company already offering a similar MCP for social technologies and other platforms like ads and app configurations. This approach allows AI agents to interact with external services, and Meta's latest move extends this capability to the process of getting businesses onto WhatsApp Business messaging.
