Medical tests key to Nigeria’s health security, says FG

The Federal Government of Nigeria has emphasized medical diagnostics as a critical national asset, urging the country to bolster local production, quality assurance, and market development to diminish reliance on imported diagnostic products. Dr Iziaq Salako, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, made these remarks during the opening of the 28th Scientific Conference and Annual General Meeting of the Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors in Abuja.

He stressed that accurate and timely diagnosis is essential for healthcare delivery, disease surveillance, and public health decisions. Salako emphasized that achieving diagnostic sovereignty necessitates more than merely local production, highlighting the importance of technology transfer, research, effective regulation, sustainable procurement, and strategic partnerships.

The National President of the Guild of Medical Laboratory Directors, Dr Samuel Fele, called on Nigeria to cease heavy dependence on imported diagnostic reagents, consumables, and equipment, advocating for the development of a competitive local manufacturing industry. He noted that Nigeria's in-vitro diagnostics market, valued at $1.33 billion in 2024, presents opportunities for local manufacturers, particularly with the increasing demand for point-of-care and rapid diagnostics.

However, Fele stressed that diagnostic sovereignty must not compromise quality, calling for stronger quality management systems, regulatory oversight, proficiency testing, and compliance with established standards. He emphasized that strategic government policies, financing, infrastructure, research grants, and procurement systems are crucial for creating predictable demand for locally manufactured products that meet international standards.

Renowned virologist Prof. Oyewale Tomori also highlighted the need for a viable market for locally manufactured medical diagnostics to sustain domestic production and warned against lowering standards in the name of local production. He stressed that Nigeria must research, develop, and manufacture diagnostic products to meet market demands.
