‘Maybe they’ll shoot you’: Carney recalls Trump’s joke on Canada-US ties

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted Canada's potential as an investment destination while emphasizing the importance of maintaining strong ties with the United States at the Canada Investment Summit in Toronto. Carney outlined a goal to attract C$1 trillion in investment over the next five years, focusing on sectors such as energy, transportation, data, defense, and critical minerals.

He recalled a humorous incident from his previous White House visit, where President Donald Trump gave him a key to the building and joked, "Maybe they'll shoot you," before adding that the relationship between the two countries was friendly. Despite tensions, Carney reaffirmed Canada's commitment to being a key US partner and reiterated the country's desire for mutual respect and partnership.

The summit attracted investors from nearly 30 countries, generating around C$500 billion in new investment commitments. Carney also noted Canada's ambitious defense spending increase, aiming for 4 percent of GDP by 2030, and the potential for C$500 billion in investment through its Defence Industrial Strategy. As trade tensions between Canada and the US persist, Carney's administration is working to diversify trade and investment relationships, including with the European Union, to bolster Canada's economy amid ongoing disputes.
