Man United lose to Brighton from 2-0 up to end 50-year record

Manchester United suffered a devastating 2-0 home defeat to Brighton in the Carabao Cup, ending a 50-year record of leading by two goals and losing at Old Trafford. The departure of Michael Carrick's side came after they conceded twice in just four minutes during the second half. It marked the first time United had led by two goals and lost at home since their 3-2 defeat to Tottenham in 1976, which was half a century ago.

Brighton's players celebrated jubilantly in the corner of Old Trafford, while Manchester United fans booed their team off the pitch at full time. This result was the worst possible outcome for both United and Carrick, who was still reeling from a recent 10-man defeat by Manchester City and the departure of 15-year-old academy star JJ Gabriel.

United had started brightly, with Shea Lacey scoring after just eight minutes, but Brighton's persistence paid off when Charalampos Kostoulas equalized just before halftime. Jonathan de Guzmán levelled the score again in the second half before Maxim de Cuyper put Brighton ahead with a well-taken goal. Despite their efforts, United could only rely on Karl Darlow to deny Diego Gomez a fourth goal.

This marked the third successive domestic cup loss for Manchester United, following their humiliating EFL Cup exit to League Two Grimsby and Brighton's FA Cup triumph just a month earlier.
