Mahama orders review of Airport enclave road network amid rising development

President John Dramani Mahama has initiated a review of the road network in the Airport enclave and central business district to prepare for anticipated traffic congestion resulting from rapid development in the area. The review is being conducted by the Ministry of Roads and Highways in partnership with the Department of Urban Roads.

Mahama explained at the sod-cutting ceremony for the $1.3 billion Sentuo Airport Garden City project that rising numbers of residential, commercial, and hospitality developments will strain existing road infrastructure. Speaking on Tuesday, September 15, he announced that the government is taking steps to ensure the road network keeps pace with the area's growth.

"I want to announce that the Ministry of Roads and Highways and Urban Roads have started looking at the road network in the airport enclave and the central business district. Because as developments like this come up, definitely the traffic congestion will also grow," he noted. The review will consider measures such as widening roads and implementing one-way systems to enhance traffic flow.

This comes amid increasing investment and infrastructure development around the Airport area. The Sentuo Airport Garden City project, valued at $1.3 billion, will include premium apartments, a 600-room hotel, a 2,500-capacity conference center, healthcare facilities, a shopping mall, and other commercial and leisure amenities. The planned road interventions aim to ensure public infrastructure develops in line with private and public sector investments, preventing congestion and overburdening existing roads.
