LEAP grant increases as government expands programme to 450,000 households

The Government of Ghana has substantially expanded the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme, increasing the number of households eligible for the bi-monthly grant from 350,000 to 450,000. This expansion, described as the most significant transformation in the programme's history by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, comes alongside substantial increases in grant amounts.

Starting this September, LEAP households can expect twice the usual bi-monthly grant amount due to two payment cycles being distributed together. Eligible households now receive GH¢392 for those with one to two members where at least one is vulnerable, and GH¢380 for those without a vulnerable member. Households with three to four members receive GH¢474 with a vulnerable member and GH¢452 without. Those with five or more members receive GH¢630 with a vulnerable member and GH¢594 without.

The Ministry has also ensured that 70 percent of the grant is protected from inflation through indexation. This reassessment, which used data from the National Household Registry, resulted in more than 226,000 households graduating from extreme poverty. The Ministry has appealed for media assistance in communicating the new arrangements, directing enrolment or grievance cases to the LEAP Management Secretariat.

The Ministry assures that all those assessed but not yet biometrically enrolled will not face delays, as the process is designed to onboard the remaining households by year's end while providing them with their full entitlements.
