KRA uncovers underground chamber hiding ethanol, tobacco in Baringo

Nairobi, Kenya – The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) recently conducted an undercover operation to combat suspected illicit activities involving ethanol and tobacco in Kimosop Central, Baringo County. Acting on intelligence, a team of KRA enforcement officers, along with officers from Baringo Central Police Station and local administrators, targeted a residence believed to be associated with an illicit alcohol trader.

During the raid, the officers discovered an underground chamber concealed beneath the floor of a bathroom. Inside the hidden room, they made a startling discovery – nine 30-litre jerricans of suspected ethanol, 40 sachets containing 200ml each of suspected ethanol, and six kilograms of tobacco. The seized goods, estimated to be worth Sh226,292, pose a significant tax risk, as Sh170,212 in taxes remains at risk of being forfeited.

The compound, which featured more than six gates, appeared to have been strategically designed to impede law enforcement efforts and conceal the illicit activities. Sadly, the suspect managed to escape during the operation, prompting authorities to intensify their pursuit. The scene was secured to allow for further investigation and the processing of the seized goods.

The KRA emphasized that this operation was part of a broader initiative to curb illicit trade, safeguard government revenue, and protect consumers from unregulated alcoholic and tobacco products.
