Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has launched the ToltHawk IoT Telemetry System to enhance real-time flood monitoring and bolster early warning systems as climate risks intensify. Irrigation Minister Riaz Khan emphasized that modern technology is vital for safeguarding lives and property against floods, glacial lake outbursts, heavy rains, droughts, heatwaves, and landslides.
At a launch ceremony and memorandum signing, Khan highlighted past major floods in 2010, 2014, and 2022, with the latter affecting over two million people. The new telemetry system will provide live data on water levels, flood risks, and environmental conditions, enabling timely decisions and warnings to at-risk communities. Devices are currently operational at Dehri Bridge in Swat, Nowshera Bridge, and the Kohat Road Bridge in Bannu, with live data streaming and integration with the Decision Support System fully functional.
The government is also strengthening flood protection infrastructure, expanding water storage, and improving the irrigation network. A comprehensive flood protection plan for 15 districts has been approved, and projects like the Chashma Right Bank Canal aim to transform barren land into cultivable fields while reducing flood risks through various initiatives.
Khan stressed the need to shift from post-disaster relief to proactive preparedness, timely warnings, and technology-driven solutions to protect lives.
