KI: Aleph Alpha und Cohere wollen „echter Konkurrent“ von OpenAI werden

Montreal and Düsseldorf, Berlin - Canadian Digital Minister Evan Solomon declared on Wednesday at the KI conference "All In" in Montreal that Germany and Canada share not only their principles. The two countries aimed to network researchers, support companies, build trustworthy infrastructure, and become "real partners". Shortly thereafter, Solomon announced together with Federal Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger the deal with Cohere CEO Aidan Gomez and Aleph Alpha co-founder Samuel Weinbach.

After months of negotiations, the takeover of the Heidelberg AI company Aleph Alpha by the Canadian AI company Cohere was agreed upon. "Cohere and Aleph Alpha have closed and signed the merger agreement," Gomez stated. The new company should become a "Canadian-German technology champion", Gomez said. The goal was to offer sovereign AI solutions and position themselves as a "real competitor" to the major US providers.

"That is precisely why we are pooling our resources," Weinbach explained. In conversation with the Handelsblatt, Gomez later said where the company stood in competition with leading US firms OpenAI and Anthropic today: "We are by far the best in technological sovereignty," said Gomez. "To catch up in quality, we would have to invest our resources to scale the models further."
