Kenya: First World Athletics Championships to be held in Africa

Kenya's political analyst Makau Mutua has praised the country's global respect following its successful bid to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships. Mutua remarked on X that this was a first for Africa, emphasizing that the decision by the global athletics body demonstrated Kenya's standing on the international stage. He stated that only a government and leader with maximum respect across the world would be able to secure such a prestigious event.

The announcement was made on September 14, 2026, during the World Athletics Council meeting in Budapest, with Nairobi selected to host events in 2029, while Munich was awarded the 2031 edition. The decision followed a competitive bid process involving four nations, with World Athletics President Sebastian Coe praising Nairobi's proposal for its outstanding qualities.

Coe highlighted Kenya's deep-rooted connection with athletics, noting that the sport is deeply ingrained in the country's culture. The bid was supported by operational plans, financial guarantees, and the ongoing renovation of Kasarani Stadium, which will also host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. World Athletics noted Kenya's strong interest in athletics, with 68% of the Kenyan population expressing high levels of enthusiasm compared to a global average of 39%.

Kenya has previously staged major international athletics events, including the 2017 World U18 Championships and the 2021 World U20 Championships. The 2029 championships will mark the first time Africa hosts the senior World Athletics Championships, placing Kenya at the forefront of the global athletics calendar with top athletes expected to converge in Nairobi.
