Kenya, Finland deepen AI cooperation ahead of UNGA 81

Kenya and Finland are enhancing their collaboration on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies as they gear up for discussions at the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGAS) in New York. Kenya's Special Envoy on Technology, Ambassador Philip Thigo, engaged in talks with Finland's Ambassador Riina-Riikka Heikka and Finland's Deputy Head of Mission Leo Svahnback.

These discussions centered on expanding bilateral cooperation in AI and related technologies, with potential applications in connectivity, Earth observation, and AI itself. The talks also looked towards the upcoming UNGA 81, where President William Ruto and Finnish President Alexander Stubb are scheduled to co-host a high-level roundtable titled "AI Middle Powers: Shared Sovereignty."

This roundtable, inspired by previous Kultaranta Talks, aims to foster cooperation among middle powers in strengthening their AI capabilities and influence. As AI becomes a focal point in the upcoming UN General Assembly session, which opened on September 8, 2026, Kenya and Finland are positioning themselves to contribute to the global conversation on AI governance and digital transformation.

The UN's priorities for the session include digital governance, artificial intelligence, and ensuring that technological advancements are inclusive. The UN General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman has emphasized "Innovation with inclusion" as a key theme, aiming to advance digital cooperation, bridge digital divides, and promote responsible AI governance.

This partnership between Kenya and Finland offers a platform to showcase their joint efforts in connectivity, Earth observation, and AI applications, while contributing to the broader international dialogue on technology governance. The 81st General Assembly's general debate is set to occur from September 22 to 28, 2026, in New York.
