Kenya eyes regional healthcare manufacturing hub at WHX Nairobi

Kenya is aiming to establish itself as a burgeoning healthcare manufacturing center in East Africa, with industry leaders convening at the World Health Expo in Nairobi. Dr. Joe Lenai, Director for Primary Healthcare, Preventive and Promotive Health, implored the gathering to reassess Africa's approach to medical technology and equipment.

He emphasized the need for manufacturers and suppliers to offer ongoing technical assistance, urging an end to Africa's role as a mere "equipment graveyard." Dr. Lenai cited the detrimental impact of unavailable spare parts, insufficient maintenance, and a dearth of technical expertise, which can render expensive medical devices obsolete, exacerbating healthcare management challenges.

Over 5,500 individuals attended the three-day expo, which hosted more than 200 exhibitors from more than thirty countries. The event served as a forum for healthcare businesses and stakeholders to investigate investment, production, trade, and international collaboration prospects.
