The Kano State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially designated Mohammed Abacha as their governorship candidate, following the voluntary resignation of the previously elected candidate, Muhammad Bello Dalhatu. Dr Bello Gambo Bichi, the PDP Chairman, emphasized that this decision was made in accordance with the party’s constitution and electoral laws.
The withdrawal of Dalhatu led to a replacement primary election, which took place on September 16, during which Abacha was formally declared the winner. The affirmation process was overseen by the panel chairman, Dr Abba Abdullahi, who confirmed that all nomination requirements were met.
Addressing the internal factional disputes within the party, Bichi announced that the deputy governorship slot would be awarded to the Turaki group. As a result, Alhaji Yusuf Ado Kibiya, a former factional PDP chairman and ex-Commissioner for Land and Agriculture, was named the new deputy governorship candidate. Following a wide consultation and reconciliation, it was agreed that there would be no remaining factions within the Kano PDP.
All National Assembly and state assembly candidates were replaced as part of the reconciliation process. The PDP chairman announced that the party is now united and growing stronger, which he believes will improve their chances in the upcoming governorship race and consolidate support across the state.
With the affirmation of Muhammad Sani Abacha and the resolution of internal disputes, the Kano PDP's leadership expressed confidence in their prospects for the next general election.
