Jay Jacobs gets his first-ever challenger for state Dem chair

Otsego County Democratic Chair Caitlin Ogden has announced her bid for the position of State Democratic Chair, marking the first time Jay Jacobs, her current superior, has faced a challenger during his prolonged tenure. Jacobs has led the state party under three governors since 2009, including stints from 2019 to the present. Despite years of complaints from the party's progressive side, Ogden believes the political landscape is evolving and a new leader is needed to steer the party towards the vision of Governor Hochul for statewide, year-round organizing.

Ogden's shift in position towards Hochul, who she previously backed in her challenge to the governor, reflects her focus on expanding the party's efforts to help candidates across the state. She criticized the lack of organizational support from Albany and the state party, noting that in 2022, they failed to provide literature for Albany candidates, only securing 40 signs for Hochul in October.

Although the party's support has improved, Ogden emphasizes the need for a more consistent statewide effort, particularly in her county, which is part of Rep. Josh Riley's battleground district.

In response to Ogden's push for a more organized approach, Jacobs acknowledged the challenges in funding such an initiative, which could require between $6 and $8 million. He highlighted the party's accomplishments, including a grant program providing $1 million to county committees and resolving long-standing debate issues. Despite being a frequent target for calls for his resignation since the 2021, 2022, and 2025 elections, Jacobs remains committed to the party. The State Democratic Party will decide on October 1 whether Jacobs will continue in his role.
