India summons Pakistani diplomat after incident in Arabian Sea

India has summoned Pakistan's top diplomat in New Delhi in response to a collision between the two nations' navies in the Arabian Sea. The incident occurred the previous day when a Pakistani naval ship collided with an Indian warship in international waters. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs lodged a protest with Pakistan's charge d’Affaires at the Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi, accusing the Pakistani navy of "unacceptable and unprofessional conduct" that led to the collision.

According to the ministry, the incident violated a 1991 bilateral agreement that requires naval ships and submarines of both countries to maintain a distance of at least three nautical miles in international waters. The ministry demanded that the charge d’affaires convey to his government the necessity for military units to adhere to the agreements between the two sides to prevent any recurrence of such incidents.

India's charge d’affaires in Islamabad was also tasked with lodging a similar protest with Pakistan's foreign ministry. As of now, Pakistan's government has not issued a response to the incident. This marks the first instance of direct military tension between the nuclear-armed neighbors since their four-day conflict last year. Since 2019, the two countries have not maintained ambassadors in each other's capitals, downgrading diplomatic ties after India revoked the special status of Indian-administered Kashmir.
